CS launches velodrome works

November 05, 2012
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam today kicked off construction of the Tseung Kwan O Velodrome cycling track.

Set to open late next year, it will be Hong Kong's first indoor cycling track that meets international standards for training and competition.

Mrs Lam officiated at the ceremony marking the start of construction.

The velodrome occupies 6.6 hectares, and cycling helmets inspired its wavy rooftop design.

Hong Kong's London Olympics medal-winning cyclist Sarah Lee said it will be a good training and competition venue for local cyclists, adding she has had to travel six hours to the Mainland for training in recent years.

Hong Kong Cycling Team head coach Shen Jin-kang said the track will help his squad, and encourage more youngsters take up the sport.

Situated on Po Hong Road, the velodrome comprises a 250-metre long wooden cycling track that meets international standards, a multi-purpose area, and a spectator stand accommodating 3,000 people.

Other facilities include changing rooms, a press conference room, and a pressroom. It also includes fitness, activity, and dance rooms, and a children's playroom.
